Why your child should play tennis?
I know as a parent you are always looking for activities for your children to be involved in outside of school. I feel like the best sport to play is tennis. Tennis first of all changed my life but I also feel it offers the best range of possibilities for young people today. Here are a few reasons you should invest your child’s time in tennis.
First of all it is fun! Once you start hitting a tennis ball back and forth you fall in love with it. I was an avid baseball player but once I tried tennis I was smitten with the joy of it all.
Second it is great exercise. In this day of computers, iPhone, and tablet we have to kids off the couch an outside. At a young age my Mom threw me out of the house and said ”go play in the street.” In the USA we have an obesity problem and our kids need a fun way exercise.
Thirdly, it is family oriented. The whole family can’t play baseball together. But my family did all play tennis together. It is a sport my Mom and I have always done together. And I made my kids all play as well.
Fourthly it is a sport of a lifetime. Some sports you can play until high school is over, but tennis is forever. I started my kids at 4 years old and I also hit balls with my 90 year old Mom. You play competitively or for fun. You can earn a college scholarship or ply league tennis.
Number five, it is a skill you have work on. So one has to learn to work hard, and learn about failure and how to stick with something. All skills we need in life. Tennis will reveal one’s character good or bad and gives parents a chance to work on it.
Six it is not too expensive. All you need is a racket, some tennis shoes and a lesson or two and you are off and playing. Team tennis league fee is about $15 a season. What a deal!
Seven is that is safe. Football you can get a concussion, baseball you could hit with a pitch, and soccer always has leg injuries. But outside of maybe a sunburn you probably can survive most injuries in tennis. Tennis elbow can be an issue but a tennis lesson or two can help that.
But for me the most important thing I got from playing tennis is lasting relationships. Kids that I competed against still remember the fun we had hanging out at tournaments. Tennis is and individual sport so you don’t just meet your team.
Now this is just a few of what I consider important reasons to play tennis rather than other sports. I am sure there are many others. I have been playing tennis for 53 years I have been through the joys of victory and the agony of defeats, but I have loved every minute of it. So let you child enjoy the ”sport of a lifetime”, Tennis.
